What are they?
A Youth Parish or Town Council is a group of young people who meet regularly in the same way as their Parish or Town Council. They discuss ideas and may have specific responsibilities, including a budget. A youth parish council can identify the needs of local young people and act as a voice for them. Members of the youth parish council can attend full parish council meetings, keeping local councillors up to date with issues that are of concern to the younger generation within the community.
How are they organised?
Ideally, like their parent parish councils, youth councils should be nominated and elected by the local young people. A schedule of meetings should be established, and agendas and minutes produced.
Why do they need to be organised so formally?
Having to go through an election process helps you to understand the electoral system. Also the formalities of a Youth Parish Council meeting will help you understand the need for a convincing case and to practise putting forward reasoned arguments for proposals. Such meetings also offer an opportunity for everyone to put their case forward and be heard.
